Ce conflit vit s'affronter les nationalistes de l'IRA, favorables à un rattachement avec la République d'Irlande, différents groupes paramilitaires protestants anti-catholiques, et l'armée et la police, sous contrôle britannique. Le processus de paix, amorcé en 1994 et qui aboutit au Good Friday Agreement (voir encadré à l'entrée "good") de 1998, marqua une nouvelle étape plus optimiste dans l'histoire de l'Irlande du Nord. -
